ABSTRACT
Stakeholders play
significant role in achieving the sustainable development for better living of
the needy and other individuals. Among
all the sectors, Disability is the neediest as it works as the real barrier for
achieving the development at all levels.
The persons with disabilities in general and particularly the one with
mental retardation are significantly affected with the process of Liberalization,
Privatization & Globalization (LPG) & Poverty and further deepens their
Poverty with vulnerabilities for the basic needs itself. These persons with
disabilities need to be empowered for their better living as a contributing
member of the community and thus able to be part of the development of the
community and Nation itself. In the process of empowering the persons with
disabilities, all the stakeholders covering: Persons with Disabilities, Parents,
Siblings, Community, Professionals, NGOs, Government, Corporate, Funding
Agencies and others play significant role with accountability at their
respective level. The sustainable development / rehabilitation of the person with
development includes: prevention, early identification, early intervention,
education both normal & special education, vocational training, employment
both in open market & sheltered workshop etc., thus supporting them to lead
an independent living with better sustainability and quality of life with
better access for their entitlements on the basis of equality & dignity as
a right. The paper presents the efforts of the NGOs and Parents’ Associations
in collaborating with the stakeholders of the disability sector in empowering
the persons with disabilities and thus achieving the sustainable development of
the individuals as well as the community. It also presents the impact of the
rehabilitation in creating the positive and barrier free environment and thus
maximizing their contribution for the development of the community and the Nation
with better sustainability on long term basis.
Key words: Stakeholders, Sustainable Development, Persons with Disabilities,
