SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GEOPHYSICS

ABSTRACT

The process of globalization along with the technology certainly brought the development but it is not uniform over the people and geographical area. Further exploitation of natural resources with the main motto of profit has resulted for several environmental challenges and disasters with poor sustainability and quality. Continuation of such process has affected the health & wealth of the people & environment which is alarming to the stakeholders for taking up need based measures. Among the natural resources, water, minerals and land are the worst affected with over exploitation, wastage, mis-utilization, pollution, ineffective planning, monitoring & evaluation, poor conservation, and other consequences resulted for poor productivity and thus lowered the quality of life of the people with poor sustainability. The Society at the receiving end feels that technology is pushing them towards marginalization with vulnerabilities with poor access for their critical needs which is the clear indication of gap or limitations in transforming the technological results from LAB to LAND. Under these unfavorable dynamic circumstances, Geophysics has got several advantages as opportunities to balance the health & wealth of natural resources, people and environment with better sustainability. The opportunities listed for the utilization of geophysical tool are need based with the focus on water without which there is no life and access for water has become the fundamental right. The paper presents the better use of geophysics for people to improve their productivity and quality of life with sustainability.

ABSTRACT

The poor access for training, rehabilitation and skill development have forced Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PWIDDs) as marginalized and out of the inclusive development. The study aims for creation of livelihoods for PWIDDs as an empowerment. It is the fact that poverty, disability and development are the cause and consequence of each other and further deepens poverty. The disability rehabilitation has transformed from charity to welfare to development to rights based model. Under these circumstances, the need of the hour is to develop need based service delivery system with innovation and creativity. The methodologies adopted are need based matching to the skills, needs and vulnerabilities of PWIDDs. The multidisciplinary approaches are effective in enhancing their skills which further improved their employment opportunities and livelihoods. Some of the trades include: Paper Plates, Gel Candles, Phenyl, and Ornamental Items. The process has created significant impact in the lives of PWIDDs along with their parents. The employment / livelihoods created have resulted for inclusion in the community as an empowerment both socially and economically with better sustainability and quality. This is a case study and the models are participative, flexible, replicable, scalable and sustainable with innovation.

ABSTRACT

Key Words: Disability, Identification, Intervention, Mainstreaming, Special Education.

Disability, Poverty and Development are the cause and consequence of each other which further deepens the poverty with vulnerabilities which are complex and dynamic in nature. Under these circumstances and in the absence of matching services, supports, protection and security, the Children with Special Needs (CWSNs) do face several challenges to be part of the inclusive community and thus forces them to be isolated and marginalized including invisible at all levels. In spite of several Disability Acts and Polices which supports for Disability Legal Frame, Training, Rehabilitation, Schemes and Benefits, still CWSNs are facing several challenges to be in the mainstream like their normal counterparts in the same community. In addition, increase in disability population alarms the stakeholders that the existing prevention measures are not effective. The study reveals the challenges of the CWSNs and ways to transform them into opportunities with need based strategies and interventions. Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) having several advantages works for effective mainstreaming as a part of community development. The limitation of having less human resources of CBR can be minimized with the combination of regular and distance mode of special education. The suggested measures have been tested, implemented and monitored in both urban and rural environments and are flexible, scalable, replicable and sustainable.

ABSTRACT

Key Words: Cleaning, SWOT, Health, Wealth, Disasters, Development, Sustainability, Quality.

Unethical way of exploiting the natural resources with mad rush for business oriented development has lead for several vulnerabilities for hazards & disasters which are complex and dynamic affecting the health & wealth of the people & environment. Some are irreversible reducing the sustainability & quality of the development. The Clean India Campaign is the need of the hour and everyone should participate with concern and commitment. The concept of Clean India should be seen as two faces of the same coin to clean physical environment and governance – systems. The Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats (SWOT) Analyses of Clean India reflects that present situation has affected the health of the people & environment on one side and development with poor sustainability & quality on the other side. As a solution, community initiatives with better coordination along with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) & (Panchayat Raj Institute (PRI) helps to resolve the issue with better problem solving solutions as managers of the model of Design, Implementation, Monitoring & Evaluation (DIME). Mobilizing the resources with better Availability, Accessibility & Affordability (3As) with the use of technologies helps to improve the Responsibility, Accountability & Transparency (RAT). It is the qualitative with interactive & observational study with samples from the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The conclusions made are very much pertinent and give clear picture about the frame work of proposed and expected. Recommendations have been made for effective participation with the use of research and technologies which are expected to create effective service delivery systems with good governance.
