The Aqua Foundation is going to organize "Vth WORLD AQUA CONGRESS 2011" at New Delhi during 16-18th November 2011.
It is the right time for all of us to understand the crises of water as it is the cause and consequence of development. Knowing the importance in general and particularly along with Coastal Belt of our Country, i have submitted the abstract and got approved for its presentation.
For the benefit of many who got heart for the WATER, posted the abstract below as:

ABSTRACT
Keywords: Salinity, Environment, Interface, Sustainability, Quality
of Life, Water harvesting, Watershed Management, Access, Migration, Pollution,
hazards, vulnerability.
1.
Statement of the
Problem: The availability and access for water resources in terms of
quantity and quality is the major challenge for the sustainable development
along the Indian Costal Belts.
2.
Objectives: The
objective of the study includes:
·
Assessment of the water resources and its
challenges including the gap between the demand Vs availability
·
Geophysical and hydrological mapping of the
groundwater resources and salt water – fresh water interface and
·
Suitable suggestions for enhancing the water
resources including the check over the saline water – fresh water (SW-FW) interface
by water harvesting, watershed management and others matching to the local
environment.
3.
Background: Water
is the most precious natural resource which controls everything on this earth.
Life without water cannot be imagined. Water is additional factor to Poverty,
Disability and Development which works as cause and consequence of each
other. People face several challenges
with the water in general and more significantly along the Coastal Belt. Along
the costal parts of Tamilnadu and Union Territory of Pondicherry, the dynamics
of the water resources have been affected due to heavy demands for water
resources which are mostly due to man made developmental activities. This
further resulted for the poor agriculture and further for migration. In view of
this, the study has been initiated for developing water resources with better
sustainability and quality.
4.
Methodology:
The methodologies adopted includes:
·
Assessment of the surface water resources based
on the existing data,
·
Geophysical Surveys both profiling and soundings
for mapping the groundwater potential and salt water – fresh water interface,
·
Bore well logging (Self Potential, Resistivity
and Neutron scanning) for better support and check,
·
Use of GIS and other software for better processing, identification &
monitoring and
·
Participatory strategies for water harvesting
and watershed management.
5.
Results & Conclusions:
The methodologies adopted have resulted for mapping the groundwater potentials
as well as the SW-FW interface with check on ground realities. This further
helped to plan for the utility of water resources for basic needs as well as
development of the area.
6.
Recommendations:
Based on the ground realities and study results, the recommendations made are:
·
Development and implementation of watersheds and
water harvesting strategies,
·
Repetition of survey at the interval of 2 years,
·
Check over the inland flow of backwaters and
·
Community Based Strategies for the development
of water resources.

Looking forward for better sharing and making the event grand success for the benefit us and nation.....
with thanks
