DISABILITY WITH RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Dear All

It is the fact that disability will act as a barrier to achieve the development in general and significantly rural development.  In this direction, an International semiar is going to be conducted at Sanghol during Nov. 2011.  I have submitted the paper and the abstract of the same is put below as:

ABSTRACT

Keywords: Rehabilitation, Development, Empowerment, Livelihoods, Inclusion, Quality of Life, Sustainability, Access, Adoptability, Convergence.

The persons with disabilities (PWDs) are the most vulnerable among the marginalized groups struggling for better living like their normal counterparts. It is the fact that disability acts as a barrier for the development as poverty, disability and development are the cause and consequence of each other and certainly disability should be the key issue while working for sustainable rural development. The access and opportunities for better living of the PWDs are poor and complex in rural environments as around 70 percent of them lives in rural villages. NGOs and other service providers at community level play significant role in catering the needs of the PWDs which starts from the stage of creating awareness, early identification and intervention to empowerment matching to their needs, skills and vulnerability with better convergence. UNCRPD and further amendment process of Indian Disability Acts tunes to the right based strategies & interventions as part of developmental model rather than welfare.

The community based approaches adopted by the NGOs in the state of Andhra Pradesh have resulted for the creation of livelihoods and employment and further for the economical empowerment of PWDs with better social inclusion. CBR approach utilizes the local resources to the maximum extent and thus creates better access, adoptability and quality with sustainability and connectivity for an effective monitoring and evaluation. The approaches are simple and can be replicated matching to the local needs and environment.

Looking forward for better sharing and utilization of the model...

All the best
