"He performs 40 surgeries daily from his wheelchair"

Dear All

Happy to be back to share with you all.

E-networking which is dynamic, literally on line, effective in terms of cost & time and on the whole connects the people irrespective of location on this earth. It only needs connectivity with commitment.

In this process, wonderful work done by a doctor came across which reads as:

...........New York-based doctor performs 40 surgeries a day for charity from his wheelchair

Dr Sharadkumar Diksheet, 80, is among the one per cent of people who have survived a severe heart attack for the second time. In fact, his cardiologist had given him only one year to live. But that was in 1994. ...............

My reflections on this wonderful & commendable work goes as......

Dr Sharadkumar Diksheet

Through network happy to know about your work and shared under the title "He performs 40 surgeries daily from his wheelchair". It is commendable, marvelous, ... no words to appreciate your work. The Nation, on behalf of the people should salute you sir for doing such a needy work in the complex living environment. It is your dedication and attitude for the people and community is attracting others to join you for doing good for the people and the community. You are the model and golden path for others to follow as in spite of excellent development in the field of medical science, still the complexity is increasing and stands at cross roads for the search of solution at the right time. Another issue is ethics which we all needs to learn from you sir as the world is moving or in fact running towards commercialization with least priority or value for humanity.

At this juncture, your excellent work should become an eye opener to the concerned stakeholders for doing their best for the development of the people with sustainability and quality of life.

We pray GOD to give you strength and health for reaching the targeted people for creating better health.....

Looking forward to share many more wonders ......

with regards

EMPOWERMENT OF YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES - AN INCLUSION

Dear All

RGNIYD, Sriperumbuddur, Tamil Nadu is going to organize National Colloquium on YOUTH EMPOWERMENT on 10th & 11th Feb 2011. Among the youth, the youth with disabilities are the focused group for making them part of the community as a right.

UNCRPD has brought the paradigm shift in the concept of disability from charity to developmental to human rights model. In this connection, addressing these youth is the need and every one should support them to keep with us at all levels with dignity and equality.

I am happy to inform you all that my paper on "RCPC A CSR – NGO MODEL FOR THE EMPOWERMENT OF YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES" has been accepted and the same is going to be presented by me.

The abstract of the paper is furnished below as:

ABSTRACT

The youth with disabilities (YWDs) gains importance as they needs to be productive for leading independent living with better sustainability and quality of life (QOL) to the maximum extent possible in the given environment. At this stage, YWDs needs to under go training and rehabilitation in general and particular to enhance their skills and further to employability. In view of the recent Act in the field of Disability entitled “United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)” which is signed by India has become obligatory to implement for the empowerment of PWDs with right based strategies. This focuses more on the environment in which they are living rather than their disability. In view of this, empowerment of the youth with disability became priority and thus considered for present study.

The Resource Centre cum Placement Cell (RCPC) is the model developed for providing training, rehabilitation and employment to the youth with disabilities. RCPC consists of various components which include: Registration, Screening & Assessment, Training & Rehabilitation, Networking, Employment and Forum. It works from the stage of entry to employment and later for the inclusion at all levels. The holistic approach is the unique feature of RCPC which works for the inclusion on the concept of equality and dignity as a right and thus tunes to UNCRPD.

In the process of empowerment of persons with disabilities, Government, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Professionals, Funding Agencies, Donors, Parents and other Stakeholders are working in coordination. Based on the challenges, skills, dynamic needs and living circumstances of the youth with disabilities and their family / community members, there exists gap in mobilizing the matching resources. At this stage, the Industries and Corporate support under the banner of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fills the gap. The developed CSR – NGO model works between the NGOs and Industries / Corporate for supporting RCPC which provides the training to employment for the youth with disabilities. The RCPC and CSR-NGO Model were implemented between the engineering Industry (as a CSR) and Welfare Society for Disabled (as an NGO) both situated in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and provided employment for the youth with disabilities with out restriction of age, gender, category and severity of disability, socio-economical status and region. It only concentrated on the development of skills and employment matching to their skills and needs.

This RCPC and CSR-NGO Model have provided employment for 202 youth with disabilities. In respect of gender, male dominates (175 with 87%) over the female (27 with 13%) which is expected as the female with disability still under goes stigma and consequences of disability irrespective of their individuals’ contribution. While coming to category of disability, hearing impaired (HI) dominates (92 with 47%) over the Speech (83 with 41%) and Orthopedically Handicapped (27with 13%). In respect of age, 25 to 30 years dominates (141 with 70%) over < 25 years (42 with 21%) and > 35 years (19 with 9%).

This process helped the Industry and NGO to get recognition with National Awards and to be with the community for reaching their target groups for business and development respectively. The conclusions include: the youth with disabilities are the victims of poverty, disability and development; the real challenges for the YWDs is their poor access for the services and benefits; RCPC and CSR - NGO Model are flexible, cost effective and benefits both individually and to provided employment for the YWDs and finally RCPC and CSR – NGO Model works for the inclusion of PWDs with sustainable development and quality of life. For an effective process for empowering the youth with disabilities for inclusion, make mandatory for the Industries / Corporate to work with CSR-NGO Model.

WATER - RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Dear All

Happy to inform you all that, NIRD, Hyderabad is going to organize the National Seminar on 20-21st Jan 2011. During this event, i am going to present the paper on "WATER RESOURCES: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT – A COMMUNITY APPRAOCH".

The abstract of the paper is furnished below as:

ABSTRACT

Keywords: Hydrological Cycle, Geophysics, Exploration, Aquifer, Sustainability, Quality of Life, Stakeholders, Rainwater Harvesting, Watershed Management, Challenges, Opportunities, Rural Development, Employability, Livelihood Activities.

Water is the most precious natural resource which controls everything on this earth. Due to complex environment both caused by natural and man made activities, access for water has become unpleasant and thus creating challenges for the users as well as to balance the hydrological cycle. This further resulted for seasonal variations and warnings like global warming and climate change with hazards & disasters. Water, when there is a rain or no rain is creating challenges with disasters and thus making the people victims of poverty. As poverty and development are the cause and consequence of each other, water is playing significant role in creating sustainable development with matching infrastructure in the rural regions.

When challenges have become common, the need of the hour is to understand them and to transform them into opportunities. Under these circumstances, creating better access with management strategies for harvesting, storage and utilization of water has been chosen in the present study as it helps for further infrastructural development in the area of water, sanitation. health, education, irrigation and other needs of the community with better connectivity.

Several opportunities were deployed in creating access for water for drinking, domestic and other purposes. This includes: assessment of water in terms of requirement and availability and balancing both with effective strategies. Use of rainwater harvesting, watershed management, geophysical exploration tools, prevention and monitoring of pollutants helped to create the data base and to formulate further action plan. Use of geophysical tools both surface and bore whole in identification of fresh water zones and monitoring of salt water – freshwater interface along the coastal belt is significant in managing the needs of the people living in the coastal villages. The impact was significant and accepted by the users and other stakeholders.

The challenges and opportunities with water in creating healthy environment with sustainable development with community approach as models were presented in the paper covering parts of India. The access for water has created for livelihood activities both directly and indirectly. The processes of transforming challenges into opportunities are simple and can be replicated in any area with suitable modifications based on their needs, challenges and environment which finally work for building infrastructure in the rural regions.
............................................................................

Looking forward for reflections on this as we all need to work with the community for creating better access for water and thus sustainable development of the people as well as the community to nation.
