"Soaring Food Prices Again Threaten to Push Millions of Asians into Poverty - Asian Development Bank"

Dear All,

Food security is becoming alarming and ADB came out with cause and consequences analysis in respect of poverty and further development. Comments and on this key issue includes:
.............................................................................
Yes, it is the fact that "Soaring Food Prices Again Threaten to Push Millions of Asians into Poverty - ADB". The logic and consequences of soaring food prices were brought out clearly and the readers can understand this. Knowing the problem should not be the end of the road or situation. Every problem has got eh solution depending upon the environment from which it came out.

Some of the significant & complex situations causing for this high cost includes:

@ Low priority for the agriculture,
@ Poor supply & support for the inputs,
@ Poor access for weather forecast,
@ Inadequate storing facilities,
@ Poor forward and backward linkages,
@ Dominance of middlemen between the purchaser /
consumer and producer,
@ Low returns for the producer,
......... the list goes on.

After knowing the challenges and complexity of the situation of product, stakeholders needs to thinks to get sustainable solutions.

Some of the solutions includes:

# Priority should be given for the agriculture at all levels,
# Adequate measurements and systems for providing quality inputs and support for
getting the same,
# Better access for weather info,
# Better storing facilities at all levels,
# Better marketing facilities,
# Direct linkages with the consumers,
..... certainly improves the returns to the producer which further improves the priority for the agriculture.

The participative approaches starting from the stage of conceptualization to implementation including monitoring and evaluation certainly improves the situation of production and further controls the food prices. This may leads for the eradication of poverty with better sustainability and quality of life.

Looking forward for better food security...

ERADICATION OF CORRUPTION ??????

Dear All

Position in the work should not become the barrier to address the evils of the society. As a citizen, every one has got the right to raise the issue. It only needs right platform or environment to get into the focus. Anna has done the right thing to ignite the minds of the people. Do not put masala what he was. See what he is what he is doing. He has done the right things to get the attention of the people who stand on both the sides of the corruption. What happening after his initial ignition? Every one (irrespective of their standing) is talking about this issue and getting focused in the media. It is the fact that media plays significant role in reaching the right people. But most of the time who got access are able to use the issue as Icon or branding.

Still people re lingering in their minds about the possibility of making acts, policies and its implementation. With all possible cause and consequences, it is possible to eradicate corruption. You known the reason or logic behind it? Let understand some of the questions like:

@ Who is taking?
@ Who is giving?
@ Who is enjoying?
@ Who is seeing?
@ Who is monitoring?

................. for all the questions, the answer is PEOPLE. So, it is we, at all places are responsible for the cause and consequences of corruption. The when we, realized that corruption is not the good thing, then it is very simple to eradicate it. It only needs awareness, change in behavior and attitude of the people.

Whatever may the consequence, Anna has initiated the movement and it is the duty of the every citizen of India to fight for the eradication of corruption. Other wise we all will be washed away with out roots or foundation.

Looking forward for the creation of CORRUPTION FREE NATION

Assessing Water Charges for Apartment Complex - Implementation : Help Required, Hyderabad

Dear All
The issue in respect of the above cited subject as requested by the Apartment owners is as follows:
.............................................
Recently I bought a 2BHK flat in KPHB, Hyderabad. The Builder has constructed two huge sumps to store manjeera(dam) water and a huge sump for bore water. Now as this is summer and that too it is hyderabad, most of the place is in shortage of bore water and even municipality is not releasing the dam water for more than 2 hrs which will hardly fill only half of the one huge sump.
Hence we are ordering tankers of water. The builder has set up 20 tanks for 20 flats of 1000 liters each. But the logic behind is that if the pipe is kept in one tank and if it filled up, the water will go in to the next one and so on. Like this every alternate day the water is being filled in 20 storage tanks. The problem is that every municipality water tank(capacity of 14000litres) costs Rs. 800 and as we are ordering alternate days, it is costing Rs. 700 extra burden for each flat besides the normal maintenance of Rs 700/- .
Some tenants are not willing to pay this as they are saying we don't use much water.
I got the idea of water meter. I think by making the 20 individual tanks to one common tank and keeping water metre for every flat will be a better idea. But we don't know how much to charge for a unit. Could you please help me in this regard?

The suggestions made in this direction includes as:
...................................................
Dear karteek Challa

Water crises has become common issue for all in general and particularly the one living in the concrete jungles like Hyderabad. I am familiar with such issues of Hyderabad. I have read the info and issues of your apartment.

It broadly groups into two as:

1. Non co-operation from the members for sharing the common services & benefits and

2. Fixing water meters and cost.

Though the first one is common, still it is possible to get the cooperation from other members by putting the reality before them and asking them to think for solutions with accountability and responsibility. If it works, it is fine other wise needs guidance from common friend.

Coming to the second point, fix the meters (by individuals itself or share the cost) and record the reading (units) on monthly basis.

The cost per individuals = no, of units used x total expenditure uncured / total number of units.

But the big question is how long you people depend upon the water supply from external sources?????????

It is the fact that municipality at any time may not be in a position to supply required quantity of water??????

Then, what are you going to do and how long this dependency will continue??????

Do you expect that the external water resources will remain to support you on long term basis?????

Discus these points among your members and do brain storming???

Still wondering for the solutions??????

The solution is in your hands only???

Do you believe this, ha,....ha, ha.....????

It is know as RAIN WATER HARVESTING.

Awareness on RWH is going on by way of news papers, tv channels, films, writings,. paints .............etc.You might have seen all these.

Understanding the importance of water, recently we all celebrated the World Water Day 2011 by way of trainings, seminars, workshops, awareness, rallies, posters, mails, presentations and so on......

RWH is very simple if you understood the issue and importance of water.

In simple terms RWH emphasis on:

# Leave empty space (with out cementing) - this allows the rainwater to infiltrate into the sub-surface. This supports for your greenery and to improve the groundwater both in general and your own borewells.

# Collete the rainwater from the roof of your apartments - you can store this on the surface for supplementing your regular water supply and inject it into the sub-surface to enhance the groundwater both in general and your own borewells.

You along with your members may be knowing all these simple measures. It needs concern and implementation with commitment.

Hope now you got relief and feeling confident to solve your own water crises and better relationships among the inmates.

Hope by next or next year your dependency on external water supply will be minimized drastically.

I will be happy to share more on this if required.

All the best

High fluoride incidence in groundwater and its potential health effects in parts of Raigarh District, Chhattisgarh, India

Dear All

Fluoride in the drinking water is one of the concern for all of us as it causes several health hazards and its consequence is disability. Reflections and suggestions made on this key issue are as follows:
..............................................................................
Dear Authors and Editor

Through network, happy to see the paper on the health hazard due to fluoride. First congratulations to authors for good work done in this direction.

For the purpose of improvement, the reflections and gaps made are as follows:

1. Due to fluoride in the drinking water, among the health hazards, disability is the known cause and it is alarming in several parts of India.
2. The samples were collected from the existing handpumps. What is the relationship between the content of F and the depth of water layer / sample?
3. All the water samples represent single layer or mix of two or more layers?
4. Any relationship or pattern was established between the content of F and the groundwater movement direction?
5. Presentation of temperature, PH & EC in the form of contours or images would have given better perspective both area wise and parameter wise.
6. An areal view about the depth of water sample Vs its location may add additional dimension for better understanding.
7. Fig 3 clearly indicates the spatial distribution of F content both during pre-monsoon and post -monsoon periods.
8. The F situation is alarming during the pre-monsoon and less during post-monsoon.
9. It shows that lowering of groundwater level during the pre-monsoon aggravates the F situation.
10. Fig 4 reflects that majority of the area is under the influence of F content and prone for health hazards.
11. It indicates that the study area is under the influence of mining activity?
12. Any relationship could be established in this direction?
13. In spite of the alarming situation, the study could not come out with appropriate preventive measures except further detailed study?

Knowing and understanding the situation, suggestions for improvement and minimizing the impact were made as:

1. With the existing data base, establish the depth and zone of water layer which contains the F content.
2. Use Geophysical Tools like simple resistivity for mapping the groundwater layers and its quality including the groundwater movement direction.
3. Use the geo-mapping tools to establish the impact of mining on the groundwater environment both quantity and quality wise including its movement direction.
4. As lowering of water level is enhancing the influence of F content (Fig 3), use groundwater recharging techniques like traditional as well as the recharging wells for improving the groundwater resources and thus to minimize the influence of F content.
5. Allow the community to shoulder the responsibility of water management at all levels with external facilitation.

Hope these measures will improve the groundwater resources and thus minimize the influence of F.
...........................................................................
Looking forward for better understanding and to work for its prevetnion.

with thanks
