solutions to tackle pavement takeovers in Mumbai

Dear All

In continuation,we do face several challenges and the wise thing is to tackle it before allowing it to become a conflict.

The issue in Bombay is "pavement takeovers in Mumbai" as reported & contacted by Karmayog. They also sought matching solutions to tackle pavement takeover in Mumbai. I made an analysis and suggestions and were furnished below for wide circulation and to get more reflections as:
..................................................................................

Dear Karamayog

You have raised the most crucial issue. The scenario is very common in all our cities an towns. The problem is serious and need to be addressed immediately as this particular challenges is going to the cause for several consequences covering: traffic issue, sanitation issue, pollution issue, rights issue.

Now the question is whom to approach and who will approach. In the democratic country every one take the responsibility and at the same time everyone can also escape. I am with the civil societies / communities in addressing several such challenges.

My reflections goes like this:

@ The first reaction is expected from the colony or society in which this part of
the issue belongs.

@ Media can raise this issue. If they come directly then it is OK. Other wise some
one form the colony should call them. TV9 is very active in this direction.

@ Civil Society Organizations / NGOs / CBOs working on the eradication of poverty,
street children / people, human rights, water and sanitation, environment
empowerment, livelihood activities, and other concern can provide solution for
these people.

@ Police can also handle the issue.

... like this, any one can make initiation. But the fact is different. People are busy and never look towards others in the present mechanical life. Human values are going down and no value for the human. It is the money which has got value and making the people to dance or mold or run. This what we are seeing in the papers and tv.

In spite of all these barriers / limitations, still, the raised problem can be solved with sustainable solutions. Many foundations, trusts, funding agencies, industries, corporate in addition to government do spend lot of money either directly or through NGOs for solving several such social issues.

Any NGO can come forward to raise the issue for which they can get support from several corners / department. If this has taken as water and sanitation issue, then Rural Development department of state and central under their Total sanitation Campaign (TSC), UNDP, UNICEF, ... can support both technically and financially.

Hope this information helps you to initiate the issue and i will be happy to formulate this into project.

Looking forward for better networking to reach the unreached with sustainable solutions and thus making them to lead better living..

"WATER FOR LIFE"

Dear All

In continuation, please read the message FROM WWW.WORLDWATERDAY.ORG as:
...................................................................................
Each year more than 1 billion of our fellow human beings have little choice but to resort to using potentially harmful sources of water. This perpetuates a silent humanitarian crisis that kills some 3900 children every day and thwarts progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The consequences of our collective failure to tackle this problem are the dimmed prospects for the billions of people locked in a cycle of poverty and disease.

The root of this underlying catastrophe lies in these plain, grim facts: 4 of every 10 people in the world do not have access to even a simple pit latrine and nearly 2 in 10 have no source of safe drinking-water. To help end this appalling state of affairs, the MDGs include a specific target (number 10) to cut in half, by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking-water and basic sanitation. In addition, the UN Millennium Project Task Force on Water and Sanitation recently recognized that integrated development and management of water resources are crucial to the success or failure of all the MDGs, as water is central to the livelihood systems of the poor.

The Water for Life Decade starts on World Water Day 2005, 22 March; it is a unique occasion not just to highlight the magnitude of the problem, but also to bring all stakeholders together to apply solutions that work. Whatever kind of events you decide to organize, we hope this will help you leverage the maximum impact, however modest your budget.

All of your efforts will contribute to making Water for Life a landmark event!
................................................................................

Hope to create better access for water in terms of quantity and quality....

All the best

WORLD WATER DAY 2011

Dear All

It is the known fact that WATER is the most precious natural resource which literally controls everything on this universe.

It is the tradition to celebrate World Water Day (WDD) every year with specific agenda and programmes all over the world. This helps the stakeholders to share the information and experiences in respect of water both harvesting and utilization. This has become as a process as the water related challenges are becoming more dynamic and complex both to understand and resolve the crises and conflicts.

Let us hear what DDD 2011 is planning:
..............................................................................
The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. This site started in 2001 as a community space and repository where people can upload their WWD event activities and reports. The theme changes every year for which annual campiagn materials can be found at the UN-Water site by clicking the WWD 2011 logo on the right.
..............................................................................

As our life and development including our children is well connected with the WATER, please organize programmes, activities, exhibitions, shows, trainings. seminars, workshops etc., with the participation of the stakeholders at all levels with the specific message covering:

@ Resouces
@ Challenges
@ Consequences &
@ Solutions

Hope these programmes helps us to build water resources and to work for healthy & eco-friendly environment.

WAYS FOR NONPROFIT ANALYSIS

Dear All

See the reflections on the ways for nonprofit analysis for the donor to decide which is posted at Social Edge as:
.........................................................................

The ways or the reflections for the points raised on "NON PROFIT ANALYSIS" are as follows:

1. What are the most critical elements that signal that a nonprofit is deserving of a donation?

Reflection: The critical elements which acts as basis to decide which nonprofit deserves a donation are:

@ Legal status - registration and continuity

@ Vision, Mission, Objectives - targeted groups and ways of addressing the
challenges under vulnerability.

@ Service Delivery Model / Channel - connectivity, level of participation,
affordability, need based strategies and adaptability.

@ Impact and success models - improvement, better living and holistic
development.

@ Financial Operations - mode of deposits, transactions, utilization and
reflections including acknowledgment.

2. What is the most meaningful financial information that can help a donor determine a nonprofit’s ability to sustain their organization?

Reflections: It includes:

@ Mode of the donation

@ Financial position and need of the organization

@ Balance sheet

3. What is the most meaning non-financial information that can help a donor determine a nonprofit’s ability to successful implement programs that work?

Reflections: The non financial information plays major role in deciding the capacity of the organization for implementing the programmes for which it is raising the donations as:

@ Organizational structure

@ Service models

@ Level of participation with the stakeholders and targeted groups

@ Networking and use of technologies for the state of art of technology /
service

4. What is the most meaningful information that can help a donor determine how much of a difference a nonprofit’s programs actual make?

Reflections: The gap between the plan and actual do work as a strong basis for raising the needs of the peopel as well as the orgnaization which includes in terms of:

@ Percentage of physical achievement

@ Level of impact in the living both quantitatively and qualitatively

@ The change in the attitude of the stakehlders

@ Level of particiation

5. Since much of the information of interest to nonprofit analysts is released only on a voluntary basis by nonprofits, how should they react when some charities share substantive information, revealing weaknesses and past failures, while the vast majority share no substantive information?

Reflections: In view of the Acts and Policies, paradigm shift took place in the concept and working of the non profit organization known as NGOs. The concept of service from the traditional voluntary or charity has been moved as right based strategies. This further resulted to:

@ Beneficiary to manager of their own rehabilitation / development

@ Government and Service Providers (NGOs) to facilitator.

@ Welfare moved to developmental activity

@ Exclusion to inclusion.

In view of these shifts, nonprofits has to work with participation and accountability in transparent environment. Under these circumstances, every stakeholder has got the right to know and to share or disseminate the information. In view of use of e-technologies Like: mails, websites, blogs, forums, networks, documents, nothing is there to hide and everything will be evidence based and open to all. It certainly helps the nonprofits to showcase their skills/ capacities and to raise its needs for mobilizing resources(MMM: Manpower, Machinery and Money)

Hope this information helps the donor to decide the eligibility of the nonprofits for extending the support.

I am with the government and nonprofits with the aim of empowering the people for their rights and thus to create better access with barrier free environment as an inclusion.

Profit Maximiztion Vs MInimization?

Dear All

In continuation, our attention is drawn to the point that profit should be maximum or minimum? This point was raised on the Social Edge Forum for discussion and my comments or reflections are as follows:
....................................................................................
In every process or activity, profit should be part of it as the process of activity should enhance its capacities with sustainability. Now the question come either profit should be maximum or minimum with respect to the cause for which it is meant. The discussion should be focused more towards the people or the society rather than the level of percentage of profit. Every business is done by the people for the people. If people are not there,no one can do business. It comes to the optimization between the product, customer and the profit (PCP).

In the case of Business activity, the component of profit should be after doing the best for its employees, shareholders and other stakeholders both directly and through its sound corporate social responsibility (CSR). The product or service should be simple, flexible and cost effective with better affordability by the targeted groups it is meant. The profit should be the business by the people and for the people (BPP) rather the business for the business (BB). An element of humanity and concern of the people should always gain priority. This process or business leads sustainability and quality.

In the case of business with the society, the profit is meant for building the capacities with matching resources for the sustainability of the business for the people. It should be by the people and for the people. In this case, the targeted groups should be the managers of their own development or rehabilitation and the service providers or the funding agencies or government should be the facilitators only.

In both the case, the component of profit should exist and the question is how much? The profit will be higher in the first case than the second one dealing with the society. As long as the process is transparent with participation of the stakeholders and aiming for the development of the people and the society, then every one welcomes the business either it is with product or with the society. The focus should be more on the objectives and impact of the business rather than purely on its profit component.

I am with the government and the community with the focus on empowerment of the people for leading better living with sustainability and quality of life (QOL) in general and more particularity with the persons with disabilities. It only needs to create barrier free environment for the real inclusion at all levels with dignity and equality as a right.

National Semianr of CSR and Sustainable Development

Dear All

Gandhigram Rural Institute is going to organize the above event in the end of Feb 2011. It is the needy and gains priority as CSR is going to play key role for achieving the development with sustainability and quality of the people as well as the country. I am planning to be with this seminar and present a paper on the role of CSR in Disability Rehabilitation as an NGO approach. The abstract of the paper is given below as:
...............................................................................
ABSTRACT

Disability affects the people in accessing their benefits and rights due to the barriers prevailing in the environment and thus deprives development to lead independent life with sustainability and quality of life (QOL). Poverty, disability and development are the cause and consequence of each other and disability further deepens the poverty with vulnerability for health hazards. Disability rehabilitation (DR) works on life cycle basis for providing care, support and training for building capacities of the persons with disabilities (PWDs) as an empowerment approach. In spite of the efforts of Government, NGOs and other stakeholders, the reach of targeted groups is 5 to 10 % and thus leaves a mammoth task of reaching the un-reached. The stigma, low priority and traditional way of working with welfare approach create barriers to be with the community in an inclusive environment. The recent Act, United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) has brought paradigm shift in DR from traditional welfare to developmental to human rights model. It focuses more on the environment rather than the limitations of the PWDs. This shift focuses more on the community based rehabilitation (CBR) with right based strategies for sustainable inclusion. Mobilization of resources matching to the needs and demands of the targeted groups is another constraint of DR. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) supports Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for an effective working of disability rehabilitation on life cycle basis. The approaches of empowering the persons with disabilities as working models were presented in this paper. The CSR - NGO collaboration works from the stage of identification to creating of better livelihood and to transform the targeted groups as productive members of the community. The concepts of Resource Centre cum Placement Cell (RCPC) as working model between CSR – NGO provided employment for 202 PWDs and have become part of the inclusive community with better living. This process has created business, branding and recognition for corporate as well as to NGO. The models are flexible, cost effective and sustainable and can be replicated with need based strategies.

Looking forward for better networking and thus to create sustainable environment.

Kind to cash

Dear All

See the comments posted in the Down to Earth on the study made by Mr Rechards Mahapatra as:

.......................................................................
Dear Rechard

Happy to go through your study and observations. It is big YES that the benefit is not reaching the needy. This needs to be seen in two ways as:

@ Mapping the BPL
@ Benefit reaching the BPL

Mapping the BPL:

The tag of poor has become opportunity for the people to grab it mostly by the one who never need it. This happens due to the inadequate measures followed in mapping. Once, these measures were made transparent then the target groups can be mapped.

Benefit reaching the BPL:

Yes, it is the fact that GO is spending very high (365%) for the benefit of Rs.1. No words to justify this wide gap??????

Based on the issues related with:

@ High cost of reaching the people,
@ poor identification &
@ poor remains poor

moving toward the conditional cash transfer (CCT), though looks better, still it needs to be seen what happens at the ground.

As per the estimates of 2007-08, if every identified family gets an amount of Rs.2140/- per month which is expected more than the income limit fixed for the BPL, certainly it will improves the situation of the groups and moves forward with development. This needs critical study by adopting villages in different regions.

This support with the creation of better livelihood opportunities matching to the challenges, skills, needs and living circumstances of the target groups alone can work for their sustainable development with quality of life (QOL).

I am with the people and making efforts in building their capacities for better livelihood opportunities. The rural people are facing several challenges in respect of opportunities matching to their local resources, their skills and needs and poor price for their products. We are seeing and reading all these challenges but still nothing is moving in the real sense to chage the crises / challenges.

Understanding the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of the area and the people, still chances are bright to move forward with sustainable development.

I will be happy to share more on this to make an action plan with the sole intention of seeing the brightness in the eyes of the targeted people.

Looking forward for better networking and thus to reach the people with sustainable solutions...

with thanks
...................................................

Sometimes, it works when we all share with concern for the development of the people as well as the community.

Looking forward...
