ABSTRACT

Keywords: Natural Resources, Exploitation, Dukkha, Noble Truths, Noble Paths, Greed, Inequality, Injustice, Vulnerabilities, Access, Empowerment, Sustainability, Quality of Life.

Buddhism helps to understand the origin and cessation of ‘dukkha’ which is the main cause for several unpleasant and unhealthy situations which affects health and wealth of people and environment. The deviations from this philosophy with dominant wealth oriented development have resulted for rivalry, conflicts, or dissatisfaction broadly put as dukkha, disasters, and further widened the gap between the rich / urban and poor / rural with deteriorated quality of life. Four noble truths and eight noble paths represented by dharmachakra acts like a road map to understand the realities of dukkha, challenges and opportunities to minimize the vulnerabilities. SWOT of the present situation of noble paths and its relevance in the selected areas of water, power and minerals has opened the gates with several opportunities for the use of modern technologies with effectiveness both in quantitative and qualitative aspects. The model of development based on the needs of the people with the motto of effective utilization of available resources through need based service delivery system with the concept of 3As which stands for availability, accessibility and affordability has expected to improve the situation in achieving sustainable development with improved quality of life. The works initiated in the area of water, power and minerals with the use of mapping tools like geophysical, and processing software have helped to map the natural resources and further to monitor its exploitation, utilization, monitoring and evaluation. The need based and participatory approaches / interventions deployed at community level have helped to understand the realities of today’s crises, opportunities to move forward and create significant impact in the lies of the targeted groups. The model is simple, flexible, replicable, and sustainable for adapting in other environments. The paper presents the relevance of Buddhism and show paths to achieve people oriented development with better sustainability and quality.
