PANCHATATVA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Lakshmi Narayana N.
Director, Geo Rehabilitation Centre
Hyderabad.

ABSTRACT

The process of business oriented development and exploitation of resources including the natural one has resulted for several challenges to the larger population by affecting their health and wealth including environment with lowered quality of life. The five elements of panchatatva covering water, earth, fire, air and space are well connected and works as cause and consequence of each other. Among them water dominates others as it is the most precious and life saving commodity and the paper presents its needs, ways, challenges, opportunities and connectivity with other elements for improving the health and wealth of the people and environment. The challenges of water covering poor harvesting, insufficient storage, less scope for watershed, limited scope to recharge the groundwater, vulnerable for pollutants, poor access, high wastage, poorer ways of disposal, getting affected with hazards and disasters, and poor community participation have resulted for water crises and one need not be surprised when next world war occurs only for water. The use of technologies with effective transfer from lab to land will strengthen the water resources along with other elements of panchatatva with better sustainability and quality. The opportunities with community based initiatives are simple, flexible, scalable, replicable and sustainable matching to the dynamics of the given environment.

ABSTRACT

Among the disabilities, intellectual and developmental disabilities are the most marginalized including isolation. Disability need to be given priority as it works as a cause and consequence with poverty and development. The training and rehabilitation frame work for PWIDDs has been grouped into five areas which include early intervention, special education, vocational training, employment / livelihoods and mainstreaming. Each area has got its own specific interventions and activities matching to the needs and skills of the targeted groups with the focus on identification, prevention, preparedness, mainstreaming, skill development and employment as an empowerment both socially and economically and further to be part of the community development as a contributing member. The service delivery systems which include IBR, HBR and CBR are very specific to reach the targeted groups both quantitatively and qualitatively. CBR has got several advantages over others and moves with right based strategies with effective inclusion with dignity and quality as a right. These models were implemented in the selected CSOs working for the targeted groups covering the rural and urban parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The processes adapted have resulted for significant impact in the lives of the targeted groups with innovation and creativity. The models are simple, flexible, replicable, scalable and sustainable.
