WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE CHILD AFTER US? - A QUESTION FROM THE PARENTS OF PERSONS WITH MENTAL RETARDATION

Dear All

It is the concern of every parent that their children should live in the community with dignity and respect with better social security. Accordingly, all the parents will provide necessary support for health,, education, employment and social status. This process gives satisfaction and belief that their children will lead better living during their life span and after that also.

In the case of parents of children with disability in general and particularly with mental retardation, the concern and process is more complex. This puts the parents under pressure to create environment both during their life span and after them. There was no specific answer till last year.

During 2011, The National Trust Came our with a novel scheme known as ASMITA. This is a life insurance which provides support and security on life cycle basis. This scheme is applicable for the persons with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities which are notified in the National Trust Act. On behalf of these four categories of persons, their parents, siblings, friends or NGOs can take the policy. In the event of death, the benefit is Rs.10 L and they will be under the care of National Trust on life cycle basis. This scheme is very good and several parents got motivated and are willing to join in this scheme. More details of the scheme can be seen at: www.thenationaltrust.in

I am in the process of creating awareness among the authorities, parents, PWDs, NGOs, PAs and other stakeholders and making arrangements to enroll into the scheme.

Looking forward to create better awareness and enrollment for the benefit of parents and their children.

All the best
