Dear All

The KRR Government College, Kodad has organized the National Seminar on "Human Rights - Environmental Protection (HREP)", during 20-21st January 2017.  I had an opportunity to be part of this and presented the invited talk on "Healthy Environment - Opportunities for Sustainable Development".

The Abstract of the same presentation is pasted below as:
.................................................................
Healthy Environment works as a platform for Development with better Sustainability and Quality. Such environments are well connected with the human rights with better space and access. Effectiveness of Human Rights works to lead for the duty to respect, the duty to protect, and the duty to fulfill and supports for clean, healthy, protective, wealthy, and accessible environments. Utilization of resources supports for people oriented development. The move towards business oriented development resulted for unethical challenges including marginalization, migration, or isolation of larger group of population with poor quality of life. Exploitation of land, soil, water, mineral and other resources added with poor resettlement and rehabilitation affected the health and wealth of the people as well as the environment sometimes making irreversible. The challenges of global warming and climate change are visible all over the globe and threatening the human survival itself. The SWOT Analysis of development results for challenges on one side and open gates for opportunities to work with innovation and creativity. All such challenges forces to look for better alternatives as a solution. The shift from welfare to development to empowerment to rights; relief centric to risk reduction; top down to bottom up approaches; single to multidisciplinary; receivers to ownership or partnership; physical to technological connectivity; and other changes has resulted for change in the service delivery systems with more of rights based strategies and interventions. Sustainable Development Goals gives more thrust for human rights as a tool to address environmental issues. The Non Governmental Organizations plays a key role to facilitate between governments and people with a toll of empowerment on life cycle basis. The community initiatives and models suggested are simple, replicable, sustainable and scalable to the dynamics of given environment.

Key Words: Development, Empowerment, Environment, Rehabilitation, Rights, Sustainability, Quality.
